Highly dynamic and precise dosing

The Hilger u. Kern / Dopag Group is one of the world's largest manufacturers of dosing and mixing systems. These are used for processing multi-component polymers and 1-component media such as greases, oils and adhesives.

With the support of Parkem AG, two product lines have been developed for processing low to high viscosity materials, including abrasive materials. This is a unique combination of pneumatic outlet valve and electromechanical drive components for precise dosing. This innovation in dispensing technology has opened up new ways and possibilities for applying sealants and adhesives.

  • Electromechanical solution with clear advantages over hydraulics and pneumatics
  • Very high dosing accuracy and consistent dosing results
  • Increased productivity thanks to dynamic motion sequences

The vectodis and vectomix dosing systems enable extremely short cycle times, especially when small dosing quantities require several shots to be dispensed with one piston volume before refilling. Dosing and mixing takes place directly at the point of application, resulting in high dosing and repeat accuracy.

  • vectodis is used for processing single-component media. All that is required is an appropriate material supply and a dosing computer. The material is discharged in batches or as a bead.

  • vectomix is used for processing multi-component media. Two vectodis piston dosing units are used for this due to their compatibility and modularity. These are connected to each other by a mixing block. The material is discharged in batches or as a bead.

Reliable dosing accuracy thanks to electromechanics

When evaluating the drive system, it was important for DOPAG to be able to use a cost-effective, compact and precise drive. An electromechanical solution was chosen, as it offers several advantages over a hydraulic pneumatic solution:

  • High dynamics
  • Travel profile can be freely parameterized
  • High drive profile fidelity even with different force requirements, which result from the dosing of very different media
  • The actuator generates exactly the amount of force required by the application at all times
  • Positioning at any point with high accuracy thanks to the integrated encoder
  • High energy efficiency
  • No hydraulic unit or compressed air preparation required

Parkem designed the electric actuators of the GSM/GSX family based on the required forces in conjunction with the required movement profiles. The planetary roller spindle integrated in the GSM/GSX electric actuator is particularly suitable for demanding continuous use. The synchronous servo motor is integrated into the cylinder housing, making the actuator the most compact in its class.

Control concept

The system is controlled via a dosing computer with touchscreen operation. It calculates the required stroke movement of the electric actuator in order to dispense the required amount of material. Data is transmitted to the servodrive in real time.

The advantages over a hydraulic or pneumatic solution are obvious: the control system can always rely on the servodrive to implement the received set values with high quality. This stability and high conversion accuracy not only ensures high dosing accuracy but also a consistent dosing result. This is what makes vectodis and vectomix so special.

Parkem supported Dopag with the optimal selection of the drive components, the design of the electric actuators and the servodrives, including thermal analysis and service life analysis. Parkem worked closely with DOPAG to carry out on-site tests and commissioning with optimization of the control parameters.
