Cable assembly

Reichle & De-Massari AG (R&M) is a globally active Swiss family business specializing in information and communication technology. Cabling solutions for high-quality communication networks have been developed and produced since 1964. The solutions are used in office buildings, data centers, by network operators, in homes and in industry. R&M is now using electromechanical servo presses from Parkem.

R&M has designed a new electromechanical system with a servo press for the production of specific network cables. The centerpiece is the modular flexiPRESS servo press from Parkem. It consists of the press module and the multifunctional press control comPRESS, which integrates the force measurement control and the servo drive in one device. Thanks to the modular concept, the flexiPRESS could be ideally integrated into the system designed by R&M, whereby R&M achieved a high level of added value.

The servo press is used for connector assembly. The pressing process crimps the individual cable cores into the connector contacts and clamps the tabs for strain relief. In preparation for this, an RJ45 plug is inserted into a transducer and the cable is inserted according to the desired wiring. The transducer is then placed under the press and the pressing process is initiated.

Pneumatic presses were used in previous systems. R&M now relies on electromechanical servo presses from Parkem in order to benefit from the advantages:

  • No air required for operation
  • Optimum determination of the movement and force profile
  • Flexible adjustment of parameters
  • Low noise emission
  • High efficiency

The flexiPRESS servo press module consists of the ETH32 electric actuator, which is driven by a servo synchronous motor. Thanks to closed-loop control, the motor only draws as much power as the process actually requires. In addition, any position can be approached with high precision without the need for mechanical adjustments. The motor, the force control process and the evaluation of the interfaces are all controlled by the multifunctional CoDeSys-based comPRESS servo press controller. An additional external controller is not required.

The installation of the system and the mechanical and electrical integration of the flexiPRESS components were carried out by R&M for the customer. Parkem carried out the following tasks for R&M with the easyPRESS basic package at a fixed price with a functional guarantee:

  • Clarification of requirements
  • Design of the servo press (performance, service life)
  • Interface mapping
  • Parameterization of the easyPRESS function
  • On-site commissioning (optimization of drive parameters and press function)
  • Short training on site
