Why aren’t ball screw drives suitable for short-stroke applications?

Because lubricating the ball screw is problematic.

The balls in ball screw assemblies are lubricated at the ends of the nut. With a short stroke, the balls in the center never pass these points, and the grease film is lost. 
Insufficient lubrication leads to screw failures or requires regular, extended lubrication strokes, which are not always feasible from a design perspective.

🔶 The grease is applied directly to the planetary rollers, which are located between the spindle and the nut.
🔶 High robustness thanks to a larger contact surface compared to balls – line contact instead of point contact
