The Birdly from Somniacs
Birdly® enables people to fulfill an old dream, namely to fly like a bird. Thanks to virtual reality (VR) and the interactive mechatronic system, you really feel like a bird. Once you have put on the VR goggles and made yourself comfortable on the system, you are ready to take off. You immediately become part of the virtual world and forget that this is a simulation. The integrated fan, which generates an airflow to match the current airspeed, and the acoustic feedback further enhance the feeling of real flying. The system of visualization, drive mechanics and control is perfectly coordinated and conveys a unique feeling of flight.
Somniacs relies on Parkem automation technology and support for this application. The hardware consists of a PNCE electric actuator, FBL servo motor and the compact Accelnet Plus drive controller, which can be integrated on a circuit board. In addition to the high dynamics and robustness of the drive package, the strength of this drive solution is also reflected in the fact that Parkem has combined high-quality components from three different brands. This means that Somniacs benefits from an optimal solution, both technically and commercially. The technical support provided to Somniacs includes the design and definition of all components, including service life analysis, commissioning with drive optimization, support with fieldbus implementation and close support during prototype testing. All this from a single source from Parkem.
Suddenly you find yourself in a natural landscape or in the middle of New York, for example, and can explore it as freely as a bird. Unlike many VR experiences, the flight path is not predetermined. You gain height by actively flapping your wings. You intuitively control the inclination of the wings and glide through the air, determining the desired direction and inclination.
