Innovative and highly accurate sheet alignment

Gietz AG, based in Gossau, Switzerland, is integrating the innovative SMART Register into its state-of-the-art hot foil stamping machine, the FSA 1060 Foil Commander. This SMART Register ensures precise alignment of the sheet before the hot stamping process. A stamping foil is transferred precisely onto the substrate under heat and pressure, guaranteeing flawless finishing. The patented Gietz SMART Register compensates for inaccurate sheet cutting and feed errors as well as sheet distortion by precisely registering the sheet using print marks or the sheet edge.
Three electrically synchronized CTL linear motor axes from Parkem are integrated into a SMART Register as a special H-gantry design. This design enables precise movement along the X and Y axes and ensures maximum stability and even force distribution.
In direct comparison to belt or spindle axes, the CTL linear motor axis ensures very compact dimensions and thus higher power density. Based on the cycle data and loads, Parkem determined and simulated the performance requirements for the servo drive and linear motor for a correct product definition. The service life of the integrated recirculating ball guides was also checked.

The result: The CTL linear motor axis achieves greater force and higher speed than the replaced solution despite its smaller size. However, the installation space remained a major challenge. Thanks to the flexibility of the manufacturer Unimotion, the CTL linear motor axis could be adapted to the design. Modified end caps with buffers and a shortened rotor reduced the overall length of the axis to the required dimension. Centering holes were also added to the axis profile for quick and precise installation in the machine.
Another advantage is the improved encapsulation and sensor technology. While the previous concept worked with an optical linear encoder and was partially open, the new drive system from Parkem relies on an insensitive magnetic linear encoder. In addition, the CTL linear motor axis is completely sealed against dust and dirt with a steel band. This eliminates malfunctions caused by contamination and significantly increases the reliability of the machine. A temperature sensor integrated into the linear motor also enables continuous thermal monitoring, thus contributing to greater process reliability.
In addition to its technical superiority, Parkem's drive solution also scores highly in economic terms. The CTL linear motor axis is more cost-effective than its predecessor and increases productivity thanks to its lower susceptibility to faults.
